MEMORANDUM FOR THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY, NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL

SUBJECT: Storage of Non-nuclear Components of Atomic Bombs in CVB Class Carriers

In order to maintain the maximum state of readiness for the CVB class carriers, the Department of Defense wishes to maintain the full service allowance of eleven non-nuclear components of atomic bombs on board at all times except during extended periods in naval shipyards.

Facilities in the USS MIDWAY (CVB-41) for storage and handling of atomic bombs will be completed in April 1951. The USS MIDWAY is scheduled to operate from East Coast ports during the remainder of calendar year 1951.

Accordingly, it is requested that the Special Committee of the National Security Council on Atomic Energy consider and recommend that the President approve the transfer of custody of eleven non-nuclear components of atomic bombs from the Atomic Energy Commission to the Department of Defense for storage in the USS MIDWAY (CVB-41).
