OF THE NAVY
OFFICE OF THE CHIEF OF NAVAL OPERATIONS
WASHINGTON 25, D. C.
26 July 1961
Divisions and Staff Officers, DCNO (Air)
From: Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Air)
Subj: Use of Popular Names for Naval Aircraft
1. During the recent Congressional Hearings, it was pointed out by the Committee that the model designations of naval aircraft, although logically conceived and systematically applied, were nevertheless complicated and confusing to the layman.
2. It is essential from a public relations standpoint that the identification of the various models of naval aircraft be as simple as possible to the public.
3. Therefore, in all contacts outside of the Department of the Navy, whether oral or written, the popular name of naval aircraft will be used. The official model assignation should also be included when appropriate, or if necessary to indicate a specific model. (e.g. Douglas Skyraider AD-5, or Lockheed Orion, P3V).
